February 24, 2000FishBase!<"Duke of Earl"> Sorry. Check out FishBase at http://www.fishbase.org/. FishBase aims to be a global database on fishes, though interestingly they intend their site to be used by all types of fish-enthusiasts, from fishermen to researchers. The FishBase search interface reflects this -- you can search by several different classifications, including common or scientific name, topic (eggs, predators, spawning, etc.), or region. You'll find a lot of information, too - the FishBase contains information on 24,000 species, over 90,000 common names (there were 132 listings under the search "dogfish"), 18,000 pictures, and 18,000 references. If you REALLY REALLY like fish you can search the LarvalBase (450 species, 550 pictures and 700 references for fish larvae) and if you REALLY REALLY REALLY like fish you can buy the FishBase on CD-ROM (3 CDs) for $95. The FishBase site also includes a link listing and a forum for discussion of fish. Thanks Scout Report. Posted to Science-Zoology
