April 27, 2000Amazing Daguerreian Registry Gives Info on American PhotographersAnd in the "I'm continually amazed at all the permutations reference information takes" department, we've got Craig's Daguerreian Registry at http://www.daguerreotype.com/ .. This man read over 1500 American city directories and did over 25 years of research to develop a cross-indexed reference of Daguerreotype artists in the US from 1839 to 1860. This reference also includes related professions including die-engraving, coloring, etc. There are, I believe, over eight thousand listings here. The registry is browsable via the hyperlinked alphabet in the middle of the page. PAGES ARE LONG. Click on the letter you want and then go refill your coffee or something. The pages themselves may be a little confusing at first. On the right is an alphabetical listing of names and details, including their name, where and when they were active, and any additional information available. (Information in the listings I browsed varied from a sentence to a couple of paragraphs.) On the left side of the page are the names listed under that letter with hyperlinks. So if you're browsing, look on the right side. If you're actually looking up a name and need quick index access, look on the left side. A great labor of love. Worth a look.
