April 26, 2000Explore the Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal or 1990 Census Data OnlineSRC, LLC has established a new Web site containing data from the Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal, a pre-census test that helped to create the census. This site makes it possible for interested parties to view the kind of data that will be available when the full census is released. You can access the data at http://www.FreeDemographics.com .. After a reasonably short registration form, you'll get access to the Census 2000 data. You'll need to chose what data you want to access (adjusted summary information, unadjusted) and what area (among other things you can specify a radius, choose a zip code, or select a county. I selected Cumberland county, Maine, for the 1990 census.) After you choose your area and data type, you're presented with a type showing you the type of reports available. You can slice and dice the data in several different ways, including everything from a census overview ( 18.32% of respondents in Cumberland County, Maine have a bachelor's degree), to ranking different variables (such as number of people in a household.) I found the summary reports easiest to use, but I'm not a census data whiz. The strongest point of this site to me is how easy and fast it is to use -- I was able to drill down to county-specific census information and get overview reports very quickly. Worth a look.
