Inktomi Announces Big Honkin' Search Index

Inktomi announced a couple days ago that they've developed a third-generation search architecture (GEN3a) and that the Inktomi search engine is up to 500 million "of the best documents on the Web." (Did they look? Really? 500 million times?) The architecture is scalable to over one billion documents. (Which means that it's scalable to what the size of what the Web was last January when Inktomi-NEC did their Webmap study.)

Ah, I see. GEN3 actually takes advantage of that study. From the press release: "...GEN3 indexes the best documents from Inktomi's WebMap database into an index that now contains over 500 million documents." (That word "best" still bothers me. Who said it was the best? Did they look? Did they do some automatic categorization?)

The new architecture and index will be available starting in May.
