April 04, 2000UL Offers Free Databases of Products and FirmsUnderwriters Laboratories, the folks behind those ubiquitous "UL" tags on your appliances, have launched a database of UL Certified products and the companies that produce them at http://www.ul.com/database/index.htm .. You can search by company name, "Category Control Number" (CCN), or a general text search. There's a Guide to the different categories, which is itself searchable. A good way to get an idea of what this listing offers is to search for "agilent" under company name (You can search for Hewlett-Packard, but you'll get over 120 results...) You'll get two results with two different product types. Click on the text link on the right, and you'll get a category name (and a link to the Guide explanation of the category) and a list of several parts and part numbers. There are not always part listings, however: Great American Fun's listings of motor-operated water pumps did not have part listings. The registered firm database is at http://www.ul.com/database/rindex.htm , and "contains information on companies assessed by UL to various quality and management system standards." (from the Web page.) You can search by registration category (ISO 9001, ISO 9002, etc.) name, SIC code or category, accreditation, or a general text search. Posted to Science-Engineering
