July 12, 2000The Google/Yahoo Mystery: Partially ClearedReaders have been sending in a variety of conjecture about the Yahoo/Google mystery -- why a Yahoo/Google search provides fewer results than a search straight from Google.com. Some users asserted that Google provides indexes of different sizes. Some users pointed out that a Yahoo/Google search might not have Google's extras, like directory and news searching. And a couple of users speculated about space aliens. (Just kidding.) Bill Dixon, spokesman for Google, sheds a little light on the subject: "Yahoo! has the opportunity to access the largest index in the world, the unprecedented more than 1 billion URLs that Google has indexed. As Yahoo! incorporates Google's search services into its popular directory and navigational guide, there will be many technical deployment and business details to work out." That's what he said. Here's my inference: 1) Yahoo hasn't finished incorporating the Google guide, 2) It's not clear when/if they will. Stay tuned.... Posted to Search Engines-Google
