July 07, 2000Two City Search EnginesLooking for city-specific subject directories? Latimes.com has launched a new city guide for Los Angeles on the eve of the Democratic National Convention. The site, located at http://www.calendarlive.com/visit ors , is visitor-oriented, containing links for shopping, entertainment, lodging, etc. It is not daily-life oriented; it doesn't look like this is where you'd get information on getting your power connected or car inspection rules. On the other hand, there's an easy to use-calendar, directory, and search. One caveat: at the top of the page just under the latimes.com logo, there's a search form. That searches the newspaper. You want the search box that's in the brown part of the site. Make sure the radio button is set on "events and venues," too, or you'll get newspaper results again. More oriented towards daily life is CheckHouston.com at http://www.checkhouston.com/ . It has a Yahoo-esque searchable subject index with about 2000 Houston-based Web resources. On the left-hand site of the main page there's a quick column of links to locally-important information, like driving directions, weather, and important information for people moving to Houston. It was launched in May. Posted to US-California , US-Texas
