August 11, 2000African Ancestored Genealogy Resources at AfriGeneasAfriGeneas, at http://www.afrigeneas.com/ , has a variety of information for those doing genealogy research for ancestors of African descent. There's a beginner's guide and a guide to resources available in each state (unfortunately, information is not available for each state. North Carolina, for example, had very little information. On the other hand, South Carolina had a lot of stuff.) The geographical information guide also includes resources from Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, and Africa. As far as collected materials are concerned, there's a surnames database (browsable and searchable. You can also post your own query) with over 10,000 surnames listed. There is a database of slave data pulled from a variety of information and a collection of census data for African Americans. The library brings together a variety of information, including newspaper articles, chat transcripts, and city directories. Nicely done and worth a look -- a wonderful variety of material has been compiled and made available at this site. Thanks to LIIWeek for the heads-up. Posted to Genealogy | TrackBack
