August 15, 2000Ask Jeeves Licenses Open Directory, Open Directory Surpasses 2 Million SitesCouple of items from the Open Directory front ( http://www.dmoz.org ). Open Directory announced yesterday that Ask Jeeves has licensed Dmoz as the "primary directory" for the Web site. You can find the directory on the main page in the "areas of interest" table. Meanwhile, Dmoz also announced that it has surpassed over 2 million sites in over 300,000 categories, which was a doubling in size in less than a year. And Yahoo is still far more popular. (Anyone know of how large Yahoo is, not counting links to internal properties?) Sometimes I can kind of understand how to popularity of the different search engines work, but I don't get the dynamics of searchable subject indexes at all.
