November 29, 2000FactMonster LaunchedThe Learning Network has launched FactMonster, a new reference engine for kids at http://www.factmonster.com . The service has a bright design and several cross-searchable resources, including an encyclopedia, almanac, and dictionary. The site also includes several sections, including a homework center, geography center, US information center, and a "people center," with a searchable database containing information on over 30,000 people. Nicely done. A few searches found a variety of information, though it's not clear that the search box supports "" for phrases. It seems to not support phrases and default to OR. Searching for "Neruda" found 8 results, while searching for "Pablo Neruda" (with quotes) found 67 results. If you can winnow down your searches (use only last names on uncommon names) you'll probably find some decent stuff from credible sources. Posted to Reference | TrackBack
