More on Coca-Cola Collection at LOC

The Library of Congress officially announced yesterday (shortly after ResearchBuzz was updated) the donation from Coca-Cola to their archives.

The donation, which will be given over a period of years, will encompass 20,000 ads and is the largest donation of corporate advertising in the history of the LOC. According to the LOC announcement, the collection "will be catalogued and digitized and eventually made available online." (The whole thing? Yikes!) The ads extend from the 1950's to the present and include US and international ads.

There are excerpts from the ads available now at http://memory.locgo v/ammem/ccmphtml/colahome.html . The online collection currently includes several ads. Among them is the 1971 "Hillside" commercial with all the folks singing about how they'd like to buy the world a Coke (complete with outtakes, including "Man (Billy Davis) being chased by others trying to spray him with Coca- Cola" and "Young lady messes up and waves off camera") There's also the Mean Joe Greene commercial (no outtakes, though. Darn!) and the first "Polar Bear" commercial.

The collection also includes a timeline of Coke's advertising, a brief history of television advertising, and information on the beverage industry. What can I say.. if you're a Coca-Cola nut or a pop-culture nut, go for it.
