December 27, 2000Civil War from a Soldier's PerspectiveI'm always reluctant to cover sites that are not large data collections, but sometimes when they have unusual and interesting information I'm persuaded. Please check out the Civil War letters of the Christie family at http://www.mnhs.or g/library/Christie/intropage.html . This site, put together by the Minnesota Historical Society, chronicles the letters of three brothers as they served in the Civil War between 1861-1865. The letters are divided by date. They're listed with date, location, author, addressee, and a brief description. Clicking on the letter shows large, quickly- loading pictures of the letters, divided across several pages. The pages are actually pretty easy to read, but there are also transcriptions available. Once you've gone through the letters, check out the Civil War collection on the same site at http://www.mnh s.org/library/search/museum/civilwar.html . This part of the site allows you to search by keyword or category for photographs of the Society's civil war collection. Searching for "buckle" found ten results, including pictures of a soldier's canteen, a haversack, and a sword belt plate. This collection is nicely done; plenty to see here. Worth a look.
