December 26, 2000Kitty/Iguana/Dog/Ferret/Rat JamWhether you're a confirmed cat person or you like dogs, Petjam ( http://www.petjam.com/ ) is worth a look. While this site is more portal-oriented than I like to cover, they have a couple of good resources for the researcher. The first is a directory of animal shelters at http://www.petjam.com/pages/shelters.html . You may not search by anything but state and the number of results you want for each state. Some states (Delaware) have no listings at all, while other states (Arizona) have some. It doesn't look like these listings are complete -- there's room to grow. After you get a list of shelters in a state, click on the shelter name. You'll get the shelter name, phone number, e-mail address, and city. Petjam also has a database of "rescues" -- groups that concentrate on rescuing one breed or another. ( http://www.petjam.com/pages/r escues.html ) Pick a breed and how many results you want, and Petjam will return a list of rescue groups. (Beagle fans will be pleased to know there are 11 groups in the database dealing with that breed.) Information is scanty; mostly just a name, city, state, and contact phone number. If you want to learn more about cat and dog breeds, check out the breed finders. By browsing to a breed name, you can get general information on different breeds (along with pictures when available.) Information includes size, friendliness, grooming needs, health issues, trainability, etc. Plenty of stuff here. Worth a look. Posted to Culture-Pets | TrackBack
