(When in doubt, go with the Monty Python headline.) PictureAustralia ( http://www.pictureaustralia .org/index.html ) provides access to over 250,000 images from major Australia institutions. Institutions involved include the State Libraries of New South Wales, Tasmania & Victoria as well as the National Library of Australia.

You have two options to finding pictures on this site. First is searching. Basic search is a keyword search. Advanced search allows you to search for keywords in several different categories (title, date, language, source, etc.). A search for "Brisbane" found almost 1500 results. Search results are given in groups of six, with a thumbnail of the picture (big thumbnails), date (when available), and caption. Clicking on the picture itself gives you a larger version of the picture. Clicking on the "More Information" link below (and if you don't have cookies enabled this won't work) gives you more information about the picture (including the collection it's from, keywords, a link to the picture, etc.)

If you don't want to do a search or an advanced search, you can try the site's "Trails." Trails are collections of pictures arranged around themes. Themes include the Olympics, early Brisbane, wildflowers of Australia, and more. Trails are grouped like search results -- thumbnails and captions in pages of six each.
