Dred Scott Documents Put Online

The AP is reporting ( http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010115/tc/dred_scott_inte net_1.html ) that documents related to Dred Scott's challenge of Missouri slavery law have been put online at http://www.library.wustl.edu/vlib/dredscott . There are 170 pages of the documents available.

The site has a chronology and an index of documents broken down by court case. Each document's page has a thumbnail of the document's front and back (larger pictures are available), a description of the document, and transcriptions in both Word and HTML format.

According to the AP article, Missouri is in the process of cleaning and performing "basic conservation work" on all Circuit Court records to 1875. A committee of historians will decide which of this material is to go on the Internet.
