January 01, 2001Food, Glorious Food ...Whether you're a gourmet or a microwave jockey like me, it's not difficult to appreciate locally-grown food. Local Harvest ( ) gives you a way to search for local farmers and farmer's markets by zip code. The front page of the site has a map with a zip code search form. Specify what kind of food outlet you're looking for -- CSAs (a farm that allows you to buy "shares" of a harvest), farmer's markets, u-pick farms, farm stands, and dairy/egg/meat outlets -- and then type in the zip code. The search result will give you a zoomed-in look at the area in which you're interested as well as a listing. The listing information varies greatly depending on whether a listing was pulled from a directory or actually provided by a farmer/CSA. If you don't like the results you get by searching with a zip code, you use the search forms on the left side of the screen. You may search by state, crop type, name, or description. If you're interested in locally-grown crops there are some links available to articles and information on locally-grown and organic farming. Posted to Science-Agriculture | TrackBack
