January 31, 2001Giant Genealogy Resource DebutsOneGreatFamily ( http://www.onegreatfamily.com/ ) launched on Thursday. Currently it has about eight million names from 41 different companies, but claims it will become the "world's largest lineage linked database." You have two registration choices to use the site. The free version is ad-supported and doesn't offer everything the paid version does. The paid version is $49.95 or $74.95 (depending on whether you want to sign up for six months or a year.) Once you've registered (the registration asks for name, address, phone, and e-mail; all but the phone number appear to be required) you'll be asked to start a family group. (Smidge intimidating for a newbie genealogist, hmm?) Once you've done that, you launch into an exciting! -- service agreement. Good grief. After the service agreement is approved, you're offered the choice of three navigations.. the family log in page, the home page of the site, or the FAQ page (I don't know about you, but when the top item on the FAQ is "Top Bug List," I get uneasy.) I chose the home page and was right back where I started. Okay, I give. This is going to take more investigation. Oooh, I see. If I was using IE or better, the software required for the site would automatically install itself. If I were using Netscape, I could download the plug-in. Since I'm using Opera, there are no instructions for me. If anyone actually gets this site to work, e-mail me and give me your feedback. Thanks. Posted to Genealogy | TrackBack
