January 08, 2001These Old HousesHey, neat! It's an attempt to list all the country houses every built in Britain or Ireland, standing or demolished. It's currently got over 6,000 listings and it's called the Database of Houses ( http://www.dicam illocompanion.com/Houses_dbsearch.asp . It allows you to search by house name, country, current district, historic county (or counties), name of architect, start date, completion date, whether or not it's extant, whether or not it's a country house, whether or not it's open to the public, and keywords of any movies or television series filmed at the house. You can limit your search to houses that have pictures and houses where filming has taken place. You don't have to use all these search elements. For example, I could (and did) do a search for all the country homes in Ireland that are open to the public. Search results give you information that's requested in the search form (name of house, circa date, etc. Not all elements of information are available for all houses.) In addition, each search result links to several other sources of information in the database, including architects, images, special information, etc. (Not all elements of information are available for all items.) The pictures are gorgeous, though I wish they were a little larger. Posted to Countries-United Kingdom | TrackBack
