April 11, 2001Open Source Directory Shows What's WhatThe OpenSource directory ( http://www.opensourcedirectory.org/) was designed as a resource to verify software packages as open-source distributions. There are a couple of different ways to search the directory. You can do a keyword search -- the query box is on the left side of the screen. You can also view a "Software Map," which looks a lot like a searchable subject index. The default status is a list of topics with the number of stable software packages within the topic. You can also view by development status, operating system, programming language, etc. You "drill down" through topics and sub-topics until you reach a product page. Product page information includes the development status, the programming language, the operating systems on which it runs, the audience for which it is intended, and a brief description (some descriptions are better than others.) This site is fairly new, and as such is not yet well populated. But this is a good idea; it'll be interesting to see it grow over time. If you're interested in open source this is worth a look.
