May 23, 2001Amazon Offers Current Movie InformationLast week Amazon announced a service on their site which provides visitors with current movie information localized by zip code. To get to the site, go to http://www.amazon.com and click on the "In Theaters" link on the left side of the page. You'll see a typical Amazonian page with feature information, box office numbers, links to popular trailers, and soundtracks for sale. There's also a query box at the top middle of the page for your zip code. Enter a zip code and you'll get a page with today's showtimes for all theaters within 5 miles of the zip code you entered. (Those two variables are changable via two drop-box menus at the top of the screen. You can view showtimes for up to a week in advance, within an area of up to 30 miles.) Information on this page includes the theater's name, address, and phone number, movie names, and movie times. Movies have a few other bits of identifying information too, including star names, ratings, and average customer review. Each movie also has its own page. Click on a title, won't you? Thank you. You'll get the dramatic poster shot, the local showtimes for the zip code you just entered, a summary of the movie, and sometimes an editorial review. And the reviews. Man, popular movies are reviewed within an inch of their lives. Knight's Tale had 38 reviews. Shrek had 61. Castaway had 77. You get the idea. Amazon does its standard "you're interested in this thing, so why not buy these five million other things" but it's not badly intrusive, and this site does provide you with a lot of current movie information and movie reviews. Worth a look. Posted to Entertainment-Movies
