October 04, 2001PBS and Oregon Public Broadcasting Launch American Field GuidePBS and OPB have gotten together to create the American Field Guide site at http://www.pbs.org/americanfieldguide/ . This site provides over 1,200 video clips comprising 150 hours of video. Looks like most of the nav is on the left. You can browse by subject (animals, ecosystems, plants, etc.) or, beneath the subject listings, you can search by keyword. In addition to searching by keywords, you can specify both a topic (again, animals, ecosystems, etc) and a state. A search for "hawk" found 52 results. Information includes a still illustration of the clip, a synopsis of the click, a transcript with your search term (if any) highlighted, and a link to the play the video. You can play the connections with high or low bandwidth, Real Media or Windows Media Player. (I swear some of the transcripts read like found poems. "Yeah, it came and it/ landed on the chimney/ and all the swifts/ were like, ahhhhh!!!/ And they're/ flying around." ) If you're an educator, be sure to check out the teacher guides at http://www.pbs.org/americanfieldguide/teachers/index.html . There's plenty to see at this site. Way to go, PBS. Posted to Science-Ecology
