November 14, 2001To Stonehenge and BeyondIf you're into megaliths, get into Megalithia at http://www.anima.demon.co.uk/. If you thought Stonehenge was the only stone circle, you've got a surprise in store -- this site indexes over 1000 sites of standing stones. The search engine for this site gives you several fields to choose from, including site name, county, and country. You can limit your search results to those verified by archeologists or include listings of speculative sites. Search results (you can only get 100 at a time) include name and number of the site, what it's near, the county, country, and type (stone circle, stone row, standing stones, etc.) Some of the names are clickable. Click on those and you'll get a page of information about that particular site, including photographs, map, commentary, and other nearby sites (Arbor Low is a good example; see its page at .) If you want to see only those sites that have details, you can see them at http://www.megalithia.com/sitelist.html. In addition to the stones database, this site has an extensive section on Stonehenge and Avebury, a book list, and some alternative possibilities for the stones' existence.
