January 31, 2002Merriam-Webster Adds Audio Pronunciations to Its SiteMerriam-Webster (http://www.Merriam-Webster.com) has added an audio feature to its online dictionary, offering audio pronunciations of about 105,000 words. Now, after you do a search, you'll see that some defined words have a small red icon beside them. (Sometimes more than one word in an definition has the icon; in the definition for "transpose," both transpose and transposable have small red icons.) The theory is that you click on the red icon and a box pops up and the pronunciation plays. I couldn't get that to happen with Opera. The box popped up, but no sound. It didn't work with Mozilla, either, until I tried the "Click here to listen with your default audio player." link in the popup box. (I tried that with Opera and it didn't work.) So you may have to do a little experimenting before this works for you. Merriam-Webster offers an audio troubleshooting FAQ from the popup box. Posted to Reference-Dictionaries | TrackBack
