March 12, 2002Reader Response -- Math PhobiaSeveral readers sent general math sites, but since the aim was sites for math phobics, I haven't included every site suggested (also because this bit would end up being about 3000 words long.) Reader HG mentions ColorMathPink ( http://www.colormathpink.com/ ) which is a math site designed for middle and high school girls . They have a page for reducing math anxiety at http://www.colormathpink.com/homework_help/fear_reducing_strategies/ . HG also points to Southwest Texas State University's math anxiety sheet at http://www.counseling.swt.edu/math_anxiety.htm and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's bibliography of print and Web-based math anxiety resources at http://www.uwm.edu/People/kal/anxiety.html . Reader TD provided a link to a math anxiety minitext/article ( http://www.mathacademy.com/pr/minitext/anxiety/index.asp ). Reader LM recommends Mathnerds ( http://www.mathnerds.com/ ) which despite its name offers volunteer math help. Mathpower ( http://www.mathpower.com/ ) is oriented toward adult learners in community college who might be having problems with math anxiety. Reader PK recommends "Math in Daily Life," ( http://www.learner.org/exhibits/dailymath ) uses everyday situations like cooking, managing bank transactions, and home decorating to teach math concepts. Coolmath ( http://www.coolmath.com ) describes itself as "an amusement park of math." It's kid-oriented by teaches math concepts in a friendly way. (Did you know that if you type the word "math" enough times it stops having much meaning? It becomes just a sound. Math math math math math math math muth muth muuuu bleh. Okay, back to the article.) Reader RK (and several other readers) recommend Math Forum ( http://www.mathforum.org/ ) which includes "Ask Dr. Math," a Q&A column. Finally, reader J points to Gomath ( http://www.gomath.com/ ) which offers free online math tutoring. This site also offers some math games. Thanks to everyone for their responses!
