May 06, 2002Library of Scotland Updates Map CollectionThe Library of Scotland Maps Collection ( http://www.nls.uk/maps/ ) is a wonder to behold. The online version comes in three main categories -- Maps of Scotland 1560-1769, Pont's Maps of Scotland, and Military Maps of Scotland from the 18th century. Maps of Scotland 1560-1769 -- About 300 maps are available here, searchable by keyword, geographic area, surveyor/mapmaker/engraver, and year dates. Information includes the title of the map and a link to the map. Map images are available in small, medium, and large sizes, and come with navigation devices to pan around the maps and move in and out. Pont's Maps of Scotland -- With this selection you can browse the maps or search the Pont site by keyword. These maps are EXTREMELY detailed; you'll need to zoom in even the large ones to appreciate them. If you're at all interested in maps I recommend you check these out; they're wonderful. Military Maps of Scotland, 18th Century -- Searchable by several variables, including roads, battles, clans, people, and places. And of course you can search by keywords. Maps are presented in much the same way that the Maps of Scotland collection is, though it's worth noting that the military maps, in addition to mapping places, map structures ("Prospect of the Front of Castle Douart," for example.). Neat collection, worth a look. Posted to Countries-United Kingdom
