June 04, 2002New Online Gem Catalog from Boston Museum of Fine ArtsThe Perseus Digital Library and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston have teamed up to present an online catalog of 140 ancient gems. The majority of the gems in the catalog are from Greece between 560 and 100 B.C. You can get to the catalog at http://tinyurl.com/avr (I don't like using TinyUrls for direct resource URLs, but the URL for this resource is over 100 characters long.) This front page is plain, providing only an index of the gems available. (Click on Collection Contents or About the Collection at the upper left for more information on the collection itself.) Click on an item. You'll get the page devoted to the item, including thumbnail pictures (the item and a cast of the item) and information, including collection, subject, gem type, material, culture, and date. Click on the pictures and you'll get the small enlargement, with options for medium and large enlargements (the medium and large are HUGE, providing for wonderful levels of detail, and are shown in a series of tiles.) Wonderful to explore. Posted to Science-Mineralogy
