August 07, 2002Locomotive Picture GalleryI know I've been working too much when the only lead I can think of is something like, "Choo-choos good. Tor like choo- choos." Anyway, the University of Connecticut Libraries has released "Steam and Electric Locomotives of the New Haven Railroad" at http://railroads.uconn.edu/locomotives/ . Though you'd think that was a fairly narrow topic, this collection contains 460 images owned by the New Haven Railroad. The pictures date from the 1920s to the early 1940s. From the front page of this site (which is really striking, by the way: well done) you can use a pull down menu to do a quick search by category. Categories include all-steam locomotives, all-electric, 4-4-2 Atlantics, 4-8-2 Mountains, and Switchers. Choose a category and you'll get a list of list of header results. (You'll get about 30 header results if you choose to display Steam Engines.) Choose a header and you'll get a list of images that include the OPAC Subject Headings Search, Title, Author (I didn't see any authors for the ones I looked at), and date. Click on the Long Title and you'll get yet ANOTHER record. This record is the long record with additional information about the picture. To get to the picture itself, choose the "linked resources." It appears that the pictures are available only in their original size. It's a shame; I would have loved to see enlargements of some of these pictures to get engine details.
