September 14, 2002California FungiDid you know there are as many as 1500 different species of fleshy fungi, or mushrooms, growing in the state of California? Sure you did. They grow all over the state, in forests, deserts, grasslands, farmlands and other places. The Fungi of California, at http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/ index.html , features over 350 species with more than 1500 pictures. I don't know a lot about mushrooms, so I started with the simple key which explains the differences between the major types of fleshy fungi. There's also a list of edible fungi on the site, if you don't want to browse the entire list. But if you DO want to browse the entire list... the Species Index links all of the species in alphabetical order. Follow the link to a picture and more info like descriptions of the physical appearance, its habitat and if it is edible. If you don't understand some of the descriptions ("Gills free to slightly adnexed,") you can link to a glossary from the bottom of each page. Posted to Science-Botany
