Database of British History Resources

A new resource for British history is now available at http://www.history.uk.com/ . This site contains a searchable directory of over 25,000 venues, organizations, and experts in the UK, as well as a browsable timeline of UK history from 10,000 BC to the present.

You can do a keyword search from the front page, but I recommend checking out the advanced search. The advanced search lets you specify a village or county, postcode or dialing code. You can also search for subject, organization name (or part of name) or plain old keyword.

Searching the City/Town form for Reading found 16 results, from an Aviation Trust to three pubs to local newspapers in England. Clicking on the name of the resource will give you basic contact information including e-mail, address, phone number, and a link to a map. Some resources are "premium listings"; information on these includes a picture, introduction, hours of operation, and other useful information.

Also of interest on this site are the timeline, which you'll see on the left side of the page, and a list of Web links. The timeline is a clickable list of dates. Click on a date and you'll get a brief description of what happened. You'll also get the opportunity to search the timeline or pull a random date from the timeline. The Weblinks page ( http://www.history.u k.com/weblinks/index.php ) is a single-page, non-annotated list of relevant Web pages divided into categories, from national libraries to statistics to online history resources to history of art.
