September 23, 2002More Scottish Genealogy OnlineLast week new resources for Scottish genealogy were launched at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov .uk/ . First thing you'll need to do is register. Registration asks for your name, address, and phone number, and the announcement box is an "opt-out" box; ie, check this box if you DO NOT want to receive announcements. Grrr. Once you've registered, gotten your password in e-mail, and logged in, you'll have the option to search several different databases: Census Index for 1881 Some of these databases you will be able to search for eefray; some of them you will need to purchase "credits" before you can even search. Credits: Credits cost £6.00 for 30. The Buy More Credits page says that "each set of 30 credits costs £6.00 and is valid for 24 hours" but the help page says "You will not lose any unused credits after your 24-hour session expires; the credits you purchase for your next session will simply be added to your existing base." You can buy credits online through a credit card. Viewing an image from the search results costs 5 credits per image. Be sure to read the Help & Other Resources section about viewing images before you do this; it looks like you'll need IE with Java enabled to look at these images. I wasn't able to a lot of "hands on" stuff with this database since I don't have any credits. But if you've got the right browser, Scottish roots, and a few pounds to spare, it looks worth a look.
