September 26, 2002The Americana ExchangeA combination of paid and free services, the Americana Exchange, at http://www.americanaexchange.co m/ , is devoted to rare books in the Americana field. The free services include AE Monthly, a monthly guide to American history "as represented in the cultures of print and illustration." Columns will include (it hasn't quite launched yet) auction reviews, reviews of new bibliographic resources, and news of the Americana book world. There's also a list of rare book auctions, with varying levels of detail. There are two paid services. The Bibliographical Database offers access to information of tens of thousands of titles related to American culture. The basic search allows you to search by such variables as author, title, and date of publication. The advanced search increases your options to by several variables, including author's gender, country printed, and language. An author search for "Smith" found 1500 results. Details on listed items include title, author, location of copy, description, year printed, etc. etc. Not all items have all details. The other paid services are auction listings. The auctions look like the free auctions service, but you get an extra level of detail which includes descriptions of specific items that are being auctioned. Lots to see here.
