FamilySearch Offers 1880 US Census, 1881 British and Canadian

Oh my. If you never see me again it's because I'm busy browsing through the new 1880 US Census, made available by volunteers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at http:/www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_se arch.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

(TinyURL: http://tinyurl.com/25pq ).

The search interface allows you to search the 1880 US Census OR the 1881 British and Canadian censuses OR all three of them. Use the pull-down menu at the top of the page to determine which you want to search.

Search is for last name and first name, and you can search either generally or heads of household. You can search by state and county, year of birth (specifying a "fudge factor" if you're not sure of the birth year) and by race. You can also specify if you want the search to find exact spelling.

Individual results for the US census include birth year, birth place, age, occupation, marital status, race, head of household name, relation to head of household, and father's and mother's birthplace. Almost hidden at the upper right part of the page is a Household link. Click on that and you'll get a table summarizing information for everyone on that page, including links to full information for each individual.

British census searching is similar, but information provided in the search results includes name, birthplace, age, occupation, marital status, head of household, relation to head of household, and disability if any. The Canadian census search results include name, birthplace, age, occupation, marital status, ethnic origin, head of household, and religion.

You can download GED files for up to fifty search results at a time. Though I would have expected this resource to be completely swamped, it worked fine. Excellent, excellent resource for the genealogist in you.
