Minnesota Historical Society Expands Death Cert Search

The Minnesota Historical Society has expanded its death certificate search ( http://people.mnhs.org/dci/ Search.cfm ) to cover the years 1908-1996. (That was not a typo. 1996.) Though not every bit of information from the death certificate is available on this site, it's an extensive index of information.

From this page you can search by first and last name (exact or Soundex) year of death (or range of years) or county of death. You can sort results by last name, first name, death year, or county of death. Search results vary depending on the date of death, but possible information available for each entry includes date of birth and date of death, place of birth, mother's maiden name, and certificate ID number.

If you find certificates for which you want additional information, you can order copies from the Historical Society for $8 each. Click the "Add to Order" icon next to each of the entries for which you want certificates (you can do this across several searches) and when you're ready, the site will generate an order form you can print out and mail to the Society. Note that the Society provides *uncertified* copies.
