Early Maps of Japan

There are now over 200 images of early maps of Japan from UC's East Asian Library Japanese Historical Map Collection at http://www.davidrumsey.com/japan/ . Eventually the entire collection will be scanned and put online.

There are three ways you can view the maps. You can use a Java client, a regular interface that will work with most typical browsers, and a GIS browser. I used the regular one to browse the contents of this collection. The regular browser popped up a new, framed window with several frames and the thumbnails from the map collection.

Double-click on the thumbnail for yet another popup window with a closer view on the map. From that window you can zoom in and out on the map, pan over it, print it, or get image details. Some gorgeous maps here.
