NY Times News Alerts Going to Fee-Based

New York Times News Alerts, gleefully covered in ResearchBuzz in March 2002 ( http://www.researchbuzz.com/news/2002/mar07mar1302.html) are going fee-based. Yup, the service is initially going to cost $19.95 a year with the expectation that it will eventually cost $29.95. A good difference between the current free service and the upcoming paid service is the number of alerts you can get. Currently you can get three alerts, but the new paid service will offer ten. The paid service will also offer a 90-day archive of articles matching your tracking topics. The service is set to switch over June 13.

I will probably continue on with the service in its paid incarnation. However, I really wish the New York Times would offer more excerpt of the matching article than they do now. Sometimes it's hard to glance at the excerpt and get an idea of whether I'd be interested in the whole article or not. You can get more information on the news alerts at http://www.nytimes.com/premiumproducts/newstracker/index.html.
