June 12, 2003Memories of World War IThe National Archives of Canada is now offering "War Diaries of the First World War" at http://www.archives.ca/02/020152_e.html, a digitized archive of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) units, who were required to keep a daily account of their "Actions in the field." The archives are searchable by unit number and date, with wildcards supported. You can also specify that only records with digital images be included in the results. Since the digital images contain the archives, this saves times. A search for records, digital images only, for "cavalry" found 6 results. Result pages include reference, file title, dates, and a link to images associated with the entry. Click on the images link and you'll get a list of pages associated with that entry. Most of the ones I saw were typewritten, though some of the cover pages were handwritten. When I looked at the pages for the 2nd Canadian Divisional Cavalry I found pages for March 1915 to May 1916. Unfortunately these were handwritten so they're a bit hard to read. Information includes troop activities and movements, weather, and various other information. Posted to History-Wars and Conflicts
