June 11, 2003Pennsylvania Archives Add Civil War Card FileThe Digital Archives of the state of Pennsylvania (http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/archive.asp) have added a new item to their collection -- the Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866, at http://tinyurl.com/e0ic. (Or use the digitalarchives link above. You'll find a link to the card file towards the bottom of the page.) The collection is not searchable but is browsable. Cards are arranged in groups of fifty. From the main page choose the letter of the alphabet you want to browse -- for example, D. You'll then get a list of the cards available in groups of fifty (Daily, John - Daily, William, Daily, William - Daizley, Thomas, Dake, Dumont C. - Dale, Henry, etc.) Click a group and you'll get the cards in groups of ten, with the option of viewing up to fifty cards per page. I recommend you print out or at least study the archive card key before you get too deeply into looking at cards (see the "View Archive Card Key" link in the upper-right part of each page.) Content available varies a lot between cards, and includes mustering in and out dates, description, occupation, and rank. An extra area for remarks can include desertion/death dates, cause of death, dates of promotion, and other spellings of the name. Some of the cards were easy to read while some were extremely blurry. I would have liked a search engine for this site, but with the groups of fifty this site is browsable enough. Posted to History-Wars and Conflicts
