July 02, 2003An Archive for Endangered SpeciesThe WildScreen Trust in Bristol, England has built an online archive of multimedia related to endangered species around the world. It's called ARKive and it's available at http://www.arkive.org/. The information (available from the "Species" link) is divided into two sections: Globally Endangered Chapter and British Chapter. Click one (be sure to click on the words; you can't get to the information just by clicking anywhere in the blue box) and you'll get a list of species categories (mammals, birds, fish, etc.) Each category has a list of animals sorted alphabetically by common name (scientific names are also listed.) I checked out the Lac Alaotra bamboo lemur. After clicking on the name I got a page of information about it, including some incredibly cute pictures and a description of the animal. There were several "more information" links off the page. One led to a long page of information about the lemur including endangered status, scientific information, range, biology, threats, and conservation. One led to a page of nine still images with links to medium and large versions of the images. And one led to a page of two different movies of the lemur feeding (the movies were available in five different media formats.) A fun browse, nicely done. Posted to Science-Biology
