July 10, 2003Grant ExplorerNonprofit organization directory GuideStar (http://www.guidestar.org/) is now offering Grant Explorer, with over 34,000 private foundations and 680,000 grants listed. This is a pay site but there is a demo available from the front page of the GuideStar site. There are three types of searches available: Funder Search, Grantee Search, and people search. For the Funder and the Grantee search, you can search by a variety of variables including name, city, state, funder size, and keyword. For the people search, you can search by name, city, state, asset size, and whether you want to search the current year's file or all years. Unfortunately as this is a demo you can't really do a search other than what's hard-coded into their demo, so I can't give you an idea of what's available other than what's in the demo. Search results include the name of the funding organization and sometimes a brief description; click on the organization's name for additional information include contact information, total grants awarded (in dollars) officers and directors, grantmaking guidelines (if any), and the breakdown of grant awards by state. If you're interested in subscribing to this service, it's $49 a month or $499 a year. You can get more information on subscribing at http://www.guidestar.org/services/ge.jsp.
