July 01, 2003Information on Neighborhood PreservationDid you ever live in one of those wonderful old neighborhoods which was built 80 years or so ago with their nice level front yards, and their narrow streets, and their, like, sidewalks on both sides of the road? If so, you'll enjoy the Neighborhood Preservation Database at http://www.neighborhoodpreservationcenter.org/database.html. This site provides links to a variety of organizations and companies involved in neighborhood preservation. From the front page of the site, choose the "Resource Referral Service Database" link. There you'll find several ways to search for information. There's a simple keyword search, a name search, a topic search (everything from Advocacy to Zoning / Land Use) and a location search (which appears to have a focus on New York, but you don't have to specify location.) A search for the topics "History" and "Waterfronts" found 33 records, with 25 on the first page. Search results include the name of the company or organization, and a brief statement about its purpose. The detail page includes an extended description of the company, area served, staff, hours, and contact information. As you might expect some organizations have more information than others. A variety of resources here. Posted to Culture-Architecture
