July 16, 2003Subject Index of History ResourcesHistory Guide, at http://www.historyguide.de/start.php, has a great way to explore the over 3,000 resources available at this site via browsing pages or a neat pull-down menu. Let's explore the pull-down menu first, from the front page. Here you can search by region (ancient world, Asia, Europe, Africa, etc.) time period (five different options covering broad spans), and subject (four options: laws/constitution, culture, society, and economy.) If you're not interested in this kind of browsing, you can also browse by time period, region, and subject. The browsing pages have much narrower subcategories than the pulldown menus (the US has six regional subcategories, for example) though some of the subject placement may confuse you-- information on various world wars is under the region category and the history category, for example. Annotation for the listings is quite good. Resources that I saw were English and German. While you're exploring this site don't forget to explore the organizations and institutions listings (a very nice listing of history-related museums!) and the listings of virtual libraries and source material (including, among other things, a well-annotated listing of virtual exhibits.)
