August 07, 2003Commercial Archive Offers Commercials in a Variety of CategoriesIsn't it weird how when you're watching a television show, you can't stand the commercials, but you can happily explore an online commercial archive for hours? Maybe it's just me anyway, there's a very extensive commercial archive at http://www.ad-rag.com. There is a snag, though. This is a pay site. It's $2 per 30 days, payable via PayPal. But I think that's cheap for the amount of materials you get here (and yeah, I did pay for a subscription.) Before you visit the site and haul out the PayPal, though, you'll need to have the QuickTime plugin. I thought with the plugin requirement I'd have to use IE but everything worked fine in Opera. The site is set up in a Slashdotesque format, with advertising news and pointers to commercials in the front middle part of the site. There's also gossip, commentary, etc. If you don't care to browse and want to go straight to the commercials, check out the super search. You can search by keyword, brand name, year, whatever -- be sure to limit your searches to the commercial section of the site. My search for Pepsi found 139 results. Results included category, name and year of the spot, and a small thumbnail of the shot. The earliest commercial on the site was a 1987 commercial featuring Michael J Fox. Click on the name and year of the spot and you'll get a page with information about the commercial and the commercial itself. Posted to Entertainment-Television | TrackBack
