August 04, 2003National Library of Medicine Releases Ingredient GuideThe National Library of Medicine has released an online guide listing the ingredients of more than 4,000 products. It's available at http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov. There are three ways you can review this information. You can search by product, by ingredient, or by MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). You can also do some browsing; products, for example, are separated by category for easy browsing. I went to products and searched for Lysol. I got 31 results, from Lysol Antibacterial Kitchen Cleaner to Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner, Thick Formula. I clicked on "Lysol Brand All Purpose Cleaner-Fresh Scent" and got a page with several sections of information, including brand information, manufacturer, health effects, handling/disposal, and chemical ingredients. In addition to ingredient and product information, this site also contains a glossary of words and abbreviations found in the database, and a brief list of links relevant to household products and toxicity. I found the site to be useful but a bit slow in responding, probably because it's very new and a lot of people are using it. Posted to Culture-Home and Household | TrackBack
