A New Way to Look at Open Directory Project Content

Clustered Hits ( http://www.clusteredhits.com/ ) offers a new way to view Open Directory Project content through "clusters" of results. Visit this site with IE if you want to avoid the error "At this time, this application works with Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher." It works with Opera if you change Opera's user agent, but you don't get the functionality that you do with IE.

What Clustered Hits does is divide your search results into clusters that encompass the Open Directory Projects top-level categories -- Arts, Business, Computers, Games, and so on. I did a search for cheese, choosing All Hits. I got 1700 results, with pointers to the clusters on the left side. When you run your mouse over the clusters, you'll get a list of the subcategory in which your keyword had a search result. If a subcategory has multiple sub-subcategories with results, they'll be listed on the left side of the page as well. Click on the category in which you're interested and you'll get a listing of the search results. These look like typical Open Directory Project listings and include the name of the site, brief description, URL, and category in which the listing appears.

If you don't want to see every possible category with a search result, choose the option High-Ranking Categories instead of All Hits. This'll give you the most common clusters from the search results. Nice; too bad it works best in IE.
