October 31, 2003Historic Gravestone Collection Now Available OnlineIt's a little bit after Halloween, but it's still close enough for me to mention the Farber Gravestone Collection, over 13,500 images showing the sculpture of over 9,000 gravestones. Most of the gravestones were made before 1800. The collection is available at http://www.davidrumsey.com/farber/ . After about twenty minutes of messing with firewall settings and browser settings, I finally got this site to work in IE. (The trick seems to be making sure that both Java and browser referrals are enabled, but I'm not sure.) The display pops up in a window that shows a first set of gravestones and gives you the option to search by keyword. A search for Smith found 180 results. Results include thumbnails of the pictures, along with the name, year of death, and the location of the stone. Double-click on an image to get a much larger version with the option to zoom in to very extensive detail. Click on the "image detail" icon in the lower right corner to get additional information on the gravestone, including stone type, height, and church. Posted to Culture-Life Stages
