November 05, 2003The Charles Cushman Photo Collection -- American Life 1938-1969The Indiana University Archives and the Digital Library Program are now offering a site for the Charles W. Cushman Photograph Collection, which features 14,500 color images of life in America between 1938 and 1969. The site's at http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/cushman/ . You can browse the archives by year, location, subject, and a couple of other variables, but I found it more fun to do a keyword search. A search for "car" found 67 results with pictures of automobiles, streetcars, some railroad cars, and a couple of horrific crash pictures. Results have thumbnails, captions, locations, and dates, Click on the picture for a larger picture and additional details including picture annotation from Cushman's notebook. Click on the picture AGAIN for an even bigger picture. Be sure to check out the highlights of the collection, which include a timeline of events in Cushman's life and a slide show of selected photographs. Those color photographs from the 30s are just stunning. Absolutely gorgeous. Posted to Countries-United States
