January 28, 2004A Directory of Place-Based Web SitesThere are zillions of place-based directories out there, but Places Online caught my eye for two reasons. First because it's administered by the Association of American Geographers. The second reason is because it has a published list of site criteria. It's available at http://www.placesonline.org/ . Despite the name (Association of American Geographers) this site covers places from around the world; on the front page there's a clickable world map. Not all areas have links available (there are currently no links for Russia) but the site assures us that more sites will be added over time. Clicking on a region brings you a smaller area, with a notation about to whom site submissions should be sent. Listings themselves, though not extensive, are well- annotation and an interesting selection. France, for example, contains four listings: the Amiens Cathedral Project, Three cycling tours through France, Vernacular architecture, and Ancient roman buildings in France.
