January 19, 2004Happy Google Hacks Week 2004 #1: Wumwum(Wumwum is short for "Watching Me Without Me", which is a nod to the Kate Bush song "Watching You Without Me," and why I'm thinking about 80s songs while writing Perl scripts is anybody's guess.) Didja ever want to check and see what pages are linking to your site, but you didn't want your search results cluttered up with your own pages and maybe those pages of a few other domains? Watching Me Without Me (Wumwum) assures that your search results will not contain results from those domains in which you're not interested. It was written to get around the fact that you can't use any other syntax with the link: query, but you can use any standard query in it (not phonebook queries, stock queries, spelling queries, etc.) and it'll work. If you're not interested in excluding domains, but you do want to get Google results in a spreadsheet format, then feel free to use this hack -- just don't put anything in the domain exclusion text box. The script won't mind. Enter your query, then enter a Google API key if you have one (and if you have one PLEASE use one; they're available at http://api.google.com and they're free.) Finally, enter a comma-delimited list of domains as you see in the example box. Results from these domains will be excluded from your search results. Finally, decide how you'd like the results formatted: either in human-readable formatting (suitable for your eyeballs), tab-separated data (suitable for your favorite spreadsheet) or an HTML table (also suitable for spreadsheets.) Enjoy. Update: The 500 error has been fixed (it was a Google API thing). Wumwum was written to celebrate Happy Google Hacks Week 2004. Check out the books in the O'Reilly Hacks Series: Google Hacks
