University System of Georgia's GALILEO announces Vanishing Georgia

The University System of Georgia's virtual library GALILEO is now offering a new collection of almost 18,000 images in the new online collection Vanishing Georgia. It's available at http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu . These images span over 100 years of Georgia history.

Click on the Vanishing Georgia link at the top of the page (there are other exhibitions mentioned here, including Baldy Editorial Cartoons, 1946-1982, 1997: The Clifford H. Baldowski Collection at the Richard B. Russell Library and the Cyrus F. Jenkins Civil War Diary, 1861-1862. Once you've clicked it you'll get a search page which allows you to search by keyword, county, city, date of photo, and a host of other variables.

The default search results show photos in a "contact sheet" format, three across (this can be changed.) A search for "peach" found 28 results ranging from the 1970s to the 1890s. Click on a picture or title and the additional information you'll get includes a slightly larger image (large JPGs and MrSid images are available) as well as information on the photo, citation information, and where the original is located.
