February 03, 2004Dipsie Search Engine Stirring Some BuzzIt hasn't launched yet. There's not much on the Web site. I can't even find a press release. And yet Dipsie ( http://www.dipsie.com/ ) is getting a bit o' buzz around the Internet. It's got some interesting claims, but I'd love to see some of the statements sourced. Dipsie says it's launching in 2004; no more additional information than that. Its about page says "Did you know that over 50% of search queries don't yield the desired results? The results that are returned require users to flip through dozens of pages to "try" and find what they're looking for. Top it off with the fact that current search engines only index about 1% of the web content universe, so it makes sense that users are becoming frustrated." 1%? Source, please? And how many users flip through dozens of pages? Most of the people I know don't go through more than a page before they get disgusted and quit. Still, the site promises a lot: "Think about how many times a day you use search. Now imagine it with better content, better ranking, delivered more intuitively; getting you where you want...in 2 clicks." The bot FAQs page doesn't tell much more about the search engine other than that the 'bot is very well behaved and obeys robots.txt. Also that it has a governor and promises not to request a page more than once every ten seconds. To me what the site claims is less important; non-launched sites can claim everything up to the cure for the common cold and nobody can say them different until launch. What's caught my interest is that the site is getting buzz despite a dearth of infomation. Despite Google's prominence, the search engine wars are still brooding, ready to bust out at any moment.
